Balanced Rocks at Lees Ferry

These balanced rocks are on the north side of the road down to Lees Ferry. The boulder of relatively hard Shinarump Formation has been protecting the softer Moenkopi rock from erosion. The forces of water, wind and blowing sand have worn away most of the Moenkopi layer. Eventually it will all wear away, and the Shinarump boulder will fall. The cliffs above the balanced rocks are made up of the hard Shinarump Formation while the slope below the cliffs on down to the level of the road is composed of the Moenkopi layer. As the Moenkopi is eroded it undercuts the hard Shinarump causing blocks of it to fall off. This forms the straight cliffs above, and provides the boulders down below that bring about the interesting balanced rock phenomenon.
