Camping on the rim

Camping is permitted only in designated campsites within Grand Canyon National Park. Violators are subject to citation and/or fine.

You MUST have a BACKCOUNTRY PERMIT to camp below the rim!


South Rim : North Rim

At the south rim you may camp on the rim at Mather Campground, near the Visitor Center. Rates are as follows:

December to February $10 per night
March to May $12 per night
June to August $15 per night
September to November$12 per night

Reservations may be made up to 5 months in advance by calling Biospherics at 1-800-365-2267 (1-800-365-CAMP). Reservations may also be made online at http://reservations.nps.gov. Callers from outside the United States should call 301-722-1257. The HEARING IMPAIRED may use the TDD phone number: 1-888-530-9796.

Advance reservations cannot be made for camping during the winter months (December, January and February). During this time Mather Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hookups for trailers are available at Trailer Village which is located next to Mather Campground. Trailer sites are $18 per night for two people, with an additional charge of $1.75 for each extra person. Campers may register at the entrance to Trailer Village. Showers and laundry are available.

The Desert View Campground is located on the Desert View Drive 26 miles east of Grand Canyon Village. The cost is $12 per site and it operates on a first-come, first-served basis. None of the sites have hookups and there is a limit of two vehicles and 6 people per site. The campground closes for the winter season sometime around mid-October and reopens around mid-May of each year.

Both the Mather and the Desert View campgrounds are operated by the National Park Service.

No showers or laundry are available at Desert View.

North Rim : South Rim

At the north rim you may camp at the North Rim Campground which remains open until mid-October (the actual date varies from year to year). This campground has 82 sites, none of which have hookups. Laundry and showers are located nearby. Fee is $15 per night for regular sites and $20 for prime rim sites (these have "canyon views"), for a maximum of 7 days per season. Reservations for the North Rim Campground may also be made through Biospherics at 1-800-365-2267 (1-800-365-CAMP) or online at http://reservations.nps.gov.

There is a $10 fee for cancelling after they campsites are paid for. Campsites can be held on check for 7 days. This gives a 7 day window to change your mind and not have to pay the $10 cancellation fee. To cancel a campsite call 1-800-388-2733 if you are cancelling more than 24 hours in advance. If you are cancelling less than 24 hours in advance call the park at 1-928-638-2151. 8 am check-in, 12 pm check-out, quiet hours 10 pm to 6 am.
