Day 3 - Deva Temple day hike

On day three I made my second attempt at Deva Temple which was yet another failure. I don't think I can camp close enough to Deva to be able to make it to the top and back to camp in one day.

11:15 am - No Deva Temple for me... again

It seems Deva Temple shall forever be out of reach for me. Maybe I am just getting too old for this but my energy level hit zero about three quarters of the way into the hike. I started a little late and kept falling behind on my schedule and at this point I just can't make it. I could rest up here for a while and probably make it to the top but having the energy to return to camp from there would be questionable. I am on the Brahma-Deva saddle right now and it looks so close. But I know the top is still at least an hour away from here. If I do go up I will be doing that final leg back to camp in the dark and I don't relish the thought of that even with a headlamp and a full moon. It's not exactly a walk in the park.

06:30 pm - Back in camp

I got back to camp around 5:30 so there is no way I would have made it to the top of Deva and back here before dark. It is already dark now and I would not be back yet. When I planned this trip and even yet when I left here this morning I thought I might be coming back in the dark. But after hiking up this "creek bed" in the daylight I decided I wanted no part of it at night. This entire route was brutal and my feet are feeling it. No blisters luckily, just sore. And I am tired. Very, very tired. I barely summoned enough energy o make dinner when I got back here. I actually boiled the remaining hot dogs for dinner tonight because I wanted something hot. They were yummy!

Tomorrow I am going to head over into the next side canyon to the east---Obi Canyon---just to look around. I have no intention of attempting Deva from that route since it is longer than this one. I am so done with Deva. I don't think the Hindu gods like me.

I called Robin on the satellite phone as soon as I got back here and she was very relieved to hear from me. It took a few attempts before the sat phone was able to connect though and I have a very large piece of open sky here.
