Use Area Type
AbbreviationDescription
CorridorMain Corridor (Bright Angel, Kaibab and River) Trails : High usage area. Good chance of frequent contact with other individuals. Trail signs, purified water, emergency phones, bridges, ranger stations, sanitary facili ties.

Recommended for those with no prior Canyon hiking experience.

ThreshThreshold : Medium usage area. Fair chance of contact with other individuals. Unmaintained trails, some signs, some sanitary facilities. Very little water available.

Recommended for Canyon hikers with some prior experience.

PrimPrimitive : Low usage area. Poor chance of contact with other individuals. Trails not maintained. Very little water available.

Recommended for Canyon hikers with lots of prior experience.

WildWilderness : Very low usage area. Very small chance of contact with other individuals. No trails, some faint routes, good route finding skills a necessity. Very little water available.

Recommended for Canyon hikers with lots of prior experience and good survival skills.

You are limited to 2 nights, consecutive or not, in designated sites or campgrounds per hiking trip. The only exception to this rule is between November 15 and February 28, when up to 4 nights are allowed in the Corridor campgrounds. For "at large" campi ng you may spend up to 7 nights in any use area.
