The following photos were taken during a recent (late winter, 1998) trip to the Cave of the Domes.

Caving Terms

Stalactite : Hangs "tight" to the ceiling. Formed by deposition of calcite from water droplets before they drop off the ceiling.

Stalagmite : "Might" eventually reach the ceiling. Formed by calcite deposited after a drip from the ceiling hits below.

Column : Formed where a stalactite and stalagmite have joined.

Flowstone : A generic name for any formation formed by calcite deposited out of solution.
