The Kiwi's were celebrating Bryce and Lee's 25th wedding anniversary and they didn't all know each other at the start of the trip. Some of them invited some others and that's how the party was formed. Linda is actually an American, from Colorado, and not a Kiwi but she knew some of these people and was part of this group.

The Germans love the American southwest and planned this trip after Harald visited the Canyon some time ago. While standing on the rim somewhere near Desert View Harald decided that he wanted to see more of it. He talked his friends into saving up for the trip and it took them many years to save enough money to do it. They did this by taking the winnings from their weekly card games and putting it aside to fund the trip.

Carolyn and Ann got together as walking partners and were actually introduced to each other as a result of both of their sons knowning one another. One thing led to another and they decided to leave their families at home and take this vacation together. Neat, EH?
