Monday, April 22, 2013 - 9pm : Esplanade camp #1

No idea what time it is really, I am just guessing. The sun went down a couple of hours ago and everyone is tucked into their sleeping bags.

This morning I was up at 5:00 to take a shower and everyone else was up around 6:00. We had breakfast at the hostel and were on the road to the trailhead around 7:30. We had a nice drive to the trailhead and saw lots of deer, some turkeys, a large jack rabbit and many, many forest cows. Many of the cows were mothers with calves. We arrived at the trailhead around 8:45 and started hiking around 9:15 or so. The weather was very nice with a bright blue sky and cool temperatures.

The hike itself has been awesome so far and everyone seems to be enjoying it. Alysia is just all smiles every time I look at her. It's hard to tell with Pam sometimes. Sometimes she smiles and seems happy and sometimes I just can't tell---she looks a little sad. I hope she is enjoying the trip and I cannot wait for her to see Deer Creek tomorrow. John and Ma are definitely enjoying themselves.

We hiked 6.5 miles today and took lots of breaks on the way down. We had lunch at the Bill Hall / Thunder River junction and after we searched for and actually found the pictographs I had directions for. That was very cool and Alysia was amazed. We tried to trick her at first with some not-so-great (modern?) rock scribbles before showing her the real ones but she wasn't buying it.

We got to camp around 4:00 or so and spent some time just hanging around before making dinner. I went to look for condors near the Esplanade rim where I found one on the last trip but no such luck this time.

After dinner we all went back out to the Esplanade rim to watch sunset and then we came back to camp. John, Max, Alysia and I sat up for a while watch the stars come out and Pam went to sleep/bed early.

Now this entry is done and it is time for me to go to sleep. I slept like crap on Saturday night because I was afraid of over sleeping and not making it up to the Canyon in time for sunrise on Sunday morning. I slept ok at the hostel though.
