We get up at 4:45 for the 5 am breakfast at the Phantom Ranch and it is great as usual. After breakfast we pick up our sack lunches for later on and then go back to bed for a little while. We get up again with everyone else at 7, chat while others are eating breakfast and start work a little after 8.

The first day's work involved laying new irrigation tubing in the campground and around the Phantom ranger station; doing some trail clean-up at the boat beach; digging holes for tree planting; and cleaning out brush from some irrigation ditches. Gene, Robin and I worked on the irrigation tubing; Mike and Cliff worked on trying to disguise some unwanted social trails near the boat beach; Steve and Hank worked on digging holes and Mary did some weeding in the irrigation ditches.

We broke for lunch and headed back to the bunkhouse around 11:30. There was no work to do in afternoon, which was fine with everyone since it was now pretty hot out. Most of us just hung around out at bunk house and ranch and rested and talked while some others went off to do some day hiking.

Later in the afternoon Pat and Lynn finally showed up. They started out late on the prior day and came down the Bright Angel Trail and ended up staying at Indian Garden that night.

I made hot dogs for dinner in the bunk house kitchen. I had brought two cans of gas with me for my camp stove but I was pretty sure that I was not going to need the second can at this point. I hadn't really planned on being able to stay in the bunk house and use the kitchen and it was very nice that we were able to.

After dinner I went to the ranger program and then to beer hall at the Phantom Ranch cantina. Robin stayed back in the bunk house, rested and did some reading. I met some other folks from the work detail at the beer hall and we talked for a while. After sucking down a couple of Tecates (Mexican Budweiser) we went outside to enjoy the evening and talk a while longer before returning to the bunkhouse.
