Close-up of meanders in Colorado River near Tanner delta

Wednesday, December 28, 1994

Greetings again Webmates,

Today I hiked up along the Beamer Trail to the confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado Rivers. The trail follows right along the river, through the tammies and around boulders for the first few miles and then climbs up onto some ledges of Tapeats Sandstone where it stays until just before you reach the Little Colorado. The Palisades of the Desert were looming 4000' above me, and only about a mile or so away to the east, for most of the hike.

The confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado Rivers is a special place and is held in reverence by the Hopi. Not far from here can be found their Sipapu, the place that that believe to have emerged into this world from the prior one. The Hopi Salt Mines, which also have a special religious significance for the Hopi can also be found near here. These areas are off limits to all visitors and can only be visited by making special arrangements with the Hopi Nation.

More tomorrow,
Grand Canyon Bob
